Once the thick outer hull of the oat has been removed, the slender oat groat remains. Possessing a nutty, light, sweet flavor, oats make a tasty and flavorful ingredient for oatmeal, porridge, cookies, scones, quick breads, and granola. Oats are an excellent source of protein, dietary fiber, thiamin, phosphorus, and manganese. And oats are heart healthy!
Looking for an "oatier" flavor compared to your usual bowl of oatmeal? Cooking whole oat groats takes a bit of planning, but prepared this way (cooking oats in lots of salted water followed by a brief steaming) results in plump, separate, tasty grains that keep their shape and are not sticky. Plan on about 45 minutes :)
